Beyond Work - The teacher

Beyond Work is a series of ethnographic portraits that attempt to describe twenty-first-century public services and public sector work. They are not deep dives based on months or years of fieldwork, they are snapshots of a ‘day in the life’. We curate and present each study in ways that make it possible to encounter the work from alternative perspectives. Each portrait is published as a physical book and online. The words, images and sounds that make up each portrait should be ‘read’ on their own terms since each contains its own story of the labour at hand.

Our most recent study documents a day in the life of a secondary school teacher, undertaken through February 2020, a month before all schools in England were closed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Teacher is a collaboration between Fieldwork, Simon Newitt and Emily Macaulay.

Previous studies, documented between 2017-2019, include a dustbin man, a post office worker, a forester and a stay at home mum, see them all at thisisbeyondwork.com
